Rep. Maloney Statement on the Passing of Claire Shulman

"Yesterday, New York City lost a trailblazer. Claire Shulman dedicated her life to bettering the lives of all Queens residents with her remarkable vision and keen political tact. I and so many others are lucky to have called Claire a friend and a colleague and the countless lives she shaped will undoubtedly be felt throughout New York politics for generations to come."

Watchdog: Homeland Security officials were wrongly appointed

WASHINGTON (AP) — The two most senior officials in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security were improperly appointed to the posts under federal law by the Trump administration, a nonpartisan congressional watchdog said Friday.

The Government Accountability Office says acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf and his acting deputy, Ken Cuccinelli, are ineligible to run the agency under the Vacancy Reform Act.

175 members of Congress call on postmaster general to reverse changes, restructuring ahead of election

Dozens of House Democrats on Wednesday signed on to a letter calling for Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to reverse his overhaul of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), citing the coronavirus pandemic and upcoming elections.

The letter, signed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and 174 other members of Congress, raised concerns about the “significant operational restructuring, done without any apparent analysis and consultation” and what effect it could have on the agency during a year when the presidential election will rely heavily on mail-in voting.

Some Mail Is Delayed Five to Six Days in NYC, Postal Workers’ Union Says

Like most businesses, the Astoria Bookshop closed its doors to customers when the pandemic erupted. That's when the Postal Service became a lifeline, allowing owner Lexi Beach to sell books online.

But she's noticed problems recently: deliveries to her store with postmarks that are two weeks old, and books mailed to customers in Queens ending up in other states before being delivered back in New York.

“There is a lot that is taking longer and taking unnecessarily longer routes, which is frustrating to our customers and frustrating to us of course,” said Beach.

House Oversight Committee Begins Kodak Investigation

While the Securities and Exchange Commission investigates Kodak, another government investigation is also underway in the U.S House of Representatives.

“I have a number of questions about it. It’s very fishy in many ways," said Rep. Carolyn Maloney.

While Maloney represents Manhattan and Brooklyn, she’s also chairwoman of the powerful House Oversight Committee, which is charged with making sure the government’s spending and operations are within the letter of the law.
