U.S. lawmakers quiz Trump's consumer chief over lack of action

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic lawmakers asked U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau chief Mick Mulvaney on Wednesday why he has not issued any sanctions during his five months at the agency.

President Donald Trump in November tapped Mulvaney, already White House budget chief, to also serve as interim head of the agency conceived to stamp out abusive lending after the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

New York congresswoman to introduce Holocaust education bill

 

WASHINGTON — A New York congresswoman is set to introduce a bill to the US House of Representatives this week aimed at increasing and improving Holocaust education in the United States.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney, a Democrat from New York, announced on Monday that she had partnered with Jewish advocacy groups to craft the Never Again Education Act, legislation designed to give American teachers the “resources and training” to teach the Holocaust more effectively.

Maloney Introduces Bill To Extend Background Check Records

U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Astoria) was joined by various gun control groups at City Hall on Thursday to announce the introduction of a gun safety bill that would strengthen national background checks.

Currently, records of allowed firearms sales must be destroyed within 24 hours of approval. Maloney’s bill would replace that 24-hour maximum with a 90-day minimum retention period to enable the FBI and ATF more time to audit the background check system and make sure that the process is working effectively.
