An 'A' for Effort: Congresswoman Gives High Marks to Long-Delayed Second Avenue Subway Project

New Yorkers who've waited decades for a subway line on Second Avenue may not agree, but the long-running and nearly completed project is getting high marks from a Congresswoman who was vital in securing federal funds to build the line. Transit Reporter Jose Martinez has the story.

The nearly century-long effort to bring a subway to Second Avenue is not done yet as the clock ticks down toward a hoped-for December opening of three new stations.

With Construction over 94% complete, Rep. Maloney Gives 2nd Avenue Subway an A- on 2016 Report Card

New York– In recognition of the MTA closing in on the final months of construction for Phase 1 of the Second Avenue Subway, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12) issued a report card today to take stock of the MTA’s progress. As of May 2016, the MTA is reporting that construction on Phase 1 is 94.4% complete, 100% of the 22,000 linear feet of track has been laid, and third rail installation is nearing completion.

Rep. Maloney Proud to Support Bipartisan Opioid Epidemic Package

Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12) said she was proud to vote for a bipartisan package of initiatives this week that are meant to address the current opioid addiction epidemic in the United States. However, as she mentioned in a floor speech yesterday, Rep. Maloney is concerned that this group of legislation fails to provide funding to implement these needed, life-saving initiatives.

New York Fed Stands By Its Fund-Transfer Procedures in Letter

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York defended fund-transfer procedures that have come under scrutiny after the theft of tens of millions of dollars from Bangladesh’s account at the New York Fed, in a letter released by a lawmaker Friday.

Thomas Baxter, the head lawyer and executive vice president at the New York Fed, was responding in an April 14 letter to enquiries from Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D., N.Y.), who asked the Fed for information about its procedures for recalling transfers that turn out to be fraudulent.

NY Fed Responds to Rep. Maloney’s Inquiry on $81 Million Bangladesh Central Bank Heist

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York has responded to Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney’s letter, found here, asking for answers on the bank’s actions in the heist of $81 million from the Bangladesh central bank’s account at the New York Fed. Rep. Maloney is the Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets and GSEs, as well as a senior member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Rep. Maloney Statement on Obama Administration Directive on Transgender Bathroom Access in Public Schools

Today, the U.S. Department of Education and Department of Justice issued a “Dear Colleague” letter to inform schools of their Title IX obligations with regard to transgender students, including a notice that schools must allow transgender students to use restrooms and locker room facilities consistent with their gender identity. US creating pink commemorative coin to fund cancer research

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. officials are developing a new, pink commemorative coin to promote breast cancer awareness and raise money for cancer research, said U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who sponsored legislation for its creation.

The New York Democrat tells The Associated Press that federal officials will hold a contest to pick artwork that will be displayed on the coin, which is expected to be released in 2018.
