Rep. Maloney comments on reports of credit card rate hikes

WASHINGTON, DC –Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) today commented on recent news reports of credit card issuers raising interest rates significantly on existing balances.

“Rate hikes on existing balances being reported by news media and consumers, even when consumers pay on time and follow the rules, are unfair and deceptive and must be stopped. Capricious actions like these are why Congress overwhelmingly passed, and President Obama signed, my credit card reform bill: to level the playing field on behalf of consumers.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney announces $37 million in Federal funding for Queens Plaza improvements

New York – Today Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Queens & Manhattan) heralded the infusion of $37 million in federal stimulus funds for infrastructure improvements and beautification efforts in and around Queens Plaza.  The $37 million will allow the city to expand the Queens Plaza Roadway Rebuilt Project.

Maloney-Honda amendment will help improve election participation of Americans Overseas

Washington DC –Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Congressman Michael Honda (D-CA) authored an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, H.R. 2647, which would create an Overseas Voting Advisory Board to assist the Department of Defense’s Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP), the lead agency empowered to assist overseas voters, whether military or civilian. H.R. 2647 is expected to be passed by the House later today.

JEC Chair Maloney reacts to New York jobs report

Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Chair of the Joint Economic Committee, issued the following statement regarding the New York State Labor Department’s May 2009 state employment data. The data showed that New York State’s private sector shed 20,400 jobs over the past month, making May the ninth straight month of job losses. The unemployment rate jumped to 8.2 percent and over 800,000 New Yorkers were counted among the unemployed.

Rep. Maloney works to save Voice of America’s Greek Desk Service
