Maloney: Senate must beat back national concealed weapons standard

WASHINGTON, DC –Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) today called on the U.S. Senate to reject an amendment to this year’s Defense Authorization Act that would allow concealed firearms in New York State.

“The Thune amendment creates a national standard for concealed weapons—essentially requiring New York to operate under the same gun laws as Dodge City. It goes against any semblance of common sense, would endanger public safety and wipe out New York’s ability to place sensible restrictions on guns in densely populated urban areas,” said Maloney.

Reps. Maloney, Murphy and Baldwin seeks permanent authorization of Women’s Health Offices in five federal agencies

Washington, DC – Today Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) was joined by Rep. Christopher Murphy (D-CT) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) in introducing the Women’s Health Office Act, H.R. 3242,  which would close the gaps in research, policy, programs, education and training related to women’s health care by providing permanent authorization to the offices of women’s health in five federal agencies.

“Without permanent authorization, those offices and the programs and research they sponsor will always be vulnerable to understaffing, underfunding, or complete elimination,” Rep. Maloney said.  “Recent initiatives like the establishment of the White House Council on Women and Girls shows that we’re finally starting to get it – women have unique experiences, needs, and interests, and these need to be considered and addressed.”

Maloney statement on Health Care Reform

WASHINGTON, DC –Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) today offered the following statement on the ongoing health care reform negotiations:

“America's health care 'system' is broken. Too many people pay too much for coverage, too many others can't afford coverage, and overall our nation pays more for a health care system whose results are worse than other industrialized nations. It's wrong, it's been that way for far too long, and finally things are aligning in Washington to do something about it.

Statement of Rep. Carolyn Maloney upon committee passage of her resolution celebrating the Daughters of Penelope:

“I’m proud to have sponsored H.Res. 209, along with my other colleagues in the Hellenic Caucus, recognizing the significant contributions of American citizens of Greek ancestry to the United States and particularly the Daughters of Penelope, the preeminent organization of women of Hellenic descent and Philhellines, founded 80 years ago this November. I thank my good friend Chairman Ed Towns for shepherding this bill through the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee today.

“Over its history, the Daughters of Penelope has achieved remarkable accomplishments.

“In addition to promoting the ideals of ancient Greece—education, philanthropy, and civic responsibility through community service and volunteerism—the organization has strengthened the status of women in society, sheltered the elderly and the abused, educated our youth, promoted Hellenic heritage, and raised funds for medical research.

“Today’s resolution celebrates the ideals and accomplishments and I’m proud to have worked to pass it through committee, and I hope to see the resolution voted on the House floor shortly.”
