Rep. Maloney Report Details Effects of Credit Crunch on Hiring by Small Businesses

New York, NY – At an event today at Baruch College, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Chair of the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee (JEC), released a report showing that small businesses, which employ three out of every four workers in the United States, continue to face tight lending standards that are limiting their ability to hire new workers. Joining Maloney at today’s event were Shirley Leung, Economic Development Director of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce; Dr. Edward Rogoff, of Baruch College’s Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship; and New York small business owners Don Winter (of Encompass Media), Colleen Molter (of QED National) and Robert Schwartz (of Eneslow Shoes).

Rep. Maloney, Sen. Lautenberg introduce bill to ensure pharmacies provide access to contraceptives

WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) today introduced the Access to Birth Control (ABC) Act to protect a woman’s fundamental right of access to legal contraception.  The bill seeks to stop pharmacies from denying the sale of contraceptives because of a pharmacy employee’s religious beliefs.  In recent years, women in at least 24 states across the country have reported incidents where they have been denied access to birth control and emergency contraception.

Reps. Maloney & Nadler Urge OMB to Deliver 9/11 Health Funds Now

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Reps. Carolyn Maloney and Jerrold Nadler are urging Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Peter Orszag to approve contracts and funding for federal programs to treat and monitor the health of those who were exposed to toxins released by the 9/11 attacks. In a letter dated yesterday to Orszag (a copy of which can be found below), Maloney and Nadler note that the World Trade Center responder health program, the 9/11 Mental Health and Substance Use Benefit Program, and the World Trade Center Health Registry will all have to cease operating in the near future unless OMB makes the contract and funding approvals, some of which have been pending for seven months.

Maloney Protests Bus Service Cuts in Turtle Bay

NEW YORK -- Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) sent a strong letter to Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chair Jay H. Walder this week protesting cuts in crosstown bus service in Turtle Bay and pointing out that Select Bus Service, when implemented on the M15 route along 1st and 2nd Avenues, will eliminate the existing limited bus stop at 50th Street and will leave this area with even fewer transportation options.

Maloney Speaks Out Against Ahmadinejad’s Presence at United Nations

New York, NY – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens), rallied outside the United Nations today with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Reps. Jerrold Nadler, Joseph Crowley, and Anthony Weiner, the Jewish Community Relations Council, and other New York leaders to denounce Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit to the UN and to call for hearings to investigate companies that do business with Iran.

Federal College Scholarships for Children of Fallen Heroes Available Starting Tomorrow

New York, NY – The children of members of the U.S. Armed Forces who died in the line of duty on or after September 11, 2001 will be eligible to apply for a substantial new scholarship starting tomorrow, May 1. Congress approved the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship last year; the scholarship covers 36 months of tuition and fees and includes a monthly stipend for living costs as well as a book allowance.
