Rep. Maloney Congratulates Governor Spitzer on Landmark WTC Insurance Settlement

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) applauded New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s leadership in forging the settlement of all outstanding insurance claims stemming from the World Trade Center attacks.  The landmark $2 billion settlement was reached after months of negotiations led by Governor Spitzer and the New York State Superintendent of Insurance, Eric Dinallo. 

Rep. Maloney, Chair of Financial Institutions Subcommittee, on the Fed’s New Credit Card Disclosure Requirements

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Chair of the House Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit, applauded the Federal Reserve and its Chairman, Ben Bernanke, for introducing a new proposed rule today on credit card disclosure requirements.  Among other things, the new rule would require credit card customers to receive, both on the actual opening of the account and with any change-in-terms notices, the same simple disclosures of rates and fees that they get in credit-card solicitations. Also, the proposal calls for an additional 30 days of advance notice to customers of any changes in interest rates or other key terms.   

City of New York, For the First Time, Rules that a Death Was Caused by 9/11 Dust

New York, NY – Today, the Medical Examiner of the City of New York confirmed that the City, for the first time, has ruled that a death was caused by exposure to toxins released by the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.  The City’s Medical Examiner, Dr. Charles Hirsch, had previously said he could not link the death of Felicia Dunn-Jones to WTC dust, but changed his determination following appeals by the victim’s family and Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Vito Fossella (R-NY).  The City also agreed to add Ms. Dunn-Jones’s name to its official list of World Trade Center victims.

Rep. Maloney’s “Kiddie Mac” Program Passes House

WASHINGTON – Today, the House passed a bipartisan federal housing finance reform bill (H.R. 1427), which included language authored by Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) that would encourage lenders to offer mortgages on low- and moderate-income housing with licensed child care facilities.  Maloney’s “Kiddie Mac” measure is aimed at solving the shortage of affordable child care. 

Reps. Seek VA Benefits for World Trade Center Veterans

WASHINGTON – In an effort to secure proper care for military veterans rendered sick or disabled as a result of their work at Ground Zero on and after 9/11, U.S. Representatives Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Christopher Shays (R-CT), and John Hall (D-NY) today asked Secretary of Veterans Affairs James Nicholson to officially declare people with Ground Zero military service eligible for veteran’s benefits.  The Representatives also asked the Department of Veterans Affairs to develop a specific disability policy for these veterans.

Maloney, Bilirakis Commend Cyprus Government for Working Toward Reunification

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representatives Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), founders and Co-Chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, introduced a resolution (H.Res. 407) this week that expresses support for the positive actions taken by the government of the Republic of Cyprus aimed at opening additional crossing points along the cease-fire line and contributing to efforts to reunify the island.

House CFIUS Bill Sponsor Comments on Senate Mark-up

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (NY-Manhattan, Queens) issued the following statement today on the Senate Banking Committee mark-up of the Foreign Investment and National Security Act of 2007.  Similar bipartisan legislation to reform the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) was introduced by Maloney and unanimously passed the House earlier this year (The National Security FIRST Act, or H.R. 556).
