In Wake of Bosnian War, Thousands of Children Left Parentless

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- More than 200,000 people were killed in the recent war in Bosnia, leaving thousands of children parentless and without homes. Last night, on the floor of the House of Representatives, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY) urged the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to work with the Bosnian government in support of programs to help children affected by war. MALONEY AMENDMENT TO COUNT AMERICANS LIVING ABROAD IN CENSUS PASSES IN THE HOUSE

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, an amendment submitted by Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) that requires the Census Bureau to start planning to count Americans Abroad as part of the 2010 Census passed in the House. The amendment to the Commerce, Justice, State Appropriations bill for FY 2001 allocates $2.5 million for the Census Bureau to begin planning to include private citizens living aboard in the 2010 decennial census.

Mr. President, Allow the NIH Guidelines to Go Forward

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) joined several of her colleagues from the House and Senate, individuals suffering from various diseases which will benefit from stem cell research, and organizations supporting stem cell research to send a bipartisan, bicameral message to the President: as you come closer to making your final decisions, we urge you to allow the NIH guidelines to go forward.

MALONEY TESTIFIES TO CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE ON LAGUARDIA AIRPORT, QUESTIONS FAA ON AIRPORT CONGESTION

NEW YORK: Testifying before a Congressional Subcommittee Field Hearing in New York City this week, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney detailed the continued problem of delays that have been crippling LaGuardia airport. Quoting a December 5th headline from the Los Angeles Times, "Welcome to LaGuardia, Enjoy Your Stay.", Congresswoman Maloney concluded that Congress must continue to limit flights scheduled at LaGuardia airport, citing the crisis of last September, when over 25 percent of all delays in the country occurred at LaGuardia airport, as the possible consequence of future inaction. MALONEY URGES POWELL NOT TO STALL ON SEX TRAFFICKING TASK FORCE

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Secretary of State Colin Powell released a report mandated by Congress examining the problem of sex trafficking world wide. Though the report did not include the United States in its three tier assessment, the report did include extensive research about the prevalence of trafficking in the U.S., noting that there are presently 45,000 - 50,000 victims in America. The Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000 mandated this report and also called on the Secretary of State to chair an Interagency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking. When asked in a media briefing today what Secretary of State Powell intends to do to address the problem of sex trafficking in the U.S., the State Department indicated that this would be up to the Task Force, and also indicated that the Task Force had yet to be established.
