Effort to Re-Open Flow of U.S. Aid for the World’s Most Impoverished Women Is Blocked on House Floor

 WASHINGTON, DC - A bold attempt on the House floor to rescue the U.S.’s contribution to the world’s leading family planning and maternal health organization was defeated today 233-192. Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Christopher Shays (R-CT), Joseph Crowley (D-NY) and Steve Israel (D-NY) offered an amendment to the Science, State, Justice and Commerce Appropriations bill that would have prevented the State Department from blocking funding to UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund. This would have essentially guaranteed that the U.S.’s contribution would be sent.

Stunned & Dismayed, 9/11 Responders Travel to Washington Seeking Fairness

 WASHINGTON, DC - Today, five 9/11 responders - representing countless other Ground Zero workers with similar health and job loss experiences - traveled to Washington to urge the President and Congress to withdraw a plan to take back $125 million in 9/11 aid meant to help injured 9/11 workers with injury-related expenses. Congressional Legislation Seeks an End to Obstetric Fistula Around the World

 WASHINGTON, DC - To end the blockade on U.S. funding that would help save women's lives around the world, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14), co-sponsors Rep. Joseph Crowley (NY-7) and Rep. Bobby Rush (IL-1), along with 10 other Members of Congress, have reintroduced legislation, the “Repairing Young Women’s Lives Around the World Act.” It would mandate $34 million to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) strictly to prevent, treat and renew the hopes of women suffering from obstetric fistula, a horrific and debilitating condition found predominantly in sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and the Arab States.

Fears About Losing $125 Million in Funds for Injured 9/11 Workers Are Confirmed

 WASHINGTON, DC - The president’s proposal to take back $125 million in 9/11 funds meant for responders, recovery workers and victims became concrete today. A House Appropriations Subcommittee deleted the $125 million from the 9/11 funds in the Labor-HHS Appropriations bill it marked up today. The money is part of the $21.4 billion 9/11 recovery package promised by the president in a Rose Garden press conference.

On 40th Anniversary of Supreme Court Birth Control Decision, Some Women Have Seen Their Rights Vanish

Federal Aid for New York Youth Education Programs In Danger

 WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Maloney and eleven of her colleagues recently sent a letter to the Appropriations Committee to stop deep cuts to the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO Programs (Upward Bound, Math and Science Upward Bound and Talent Search). If these cuts are approved, the state of New York would lose over $18 million and 50 programs serving over 19,000 young New Yorkers. Members of NY Congressional Delegation Urge President & Congress Not to Withdraw 9/11 Aid for Injured Responders

 WASHINGTON, DC - This week, 23 Members of the New York Congressional delegation urged President Bush to withdraw a proposal in his Fiscal Year 2006 budget that would rescind $125 million in federal funds designated for 9/11 workers compensation and job retraining aid.

Fair Retirement Credit for 9/11 National Guard Included in House Passed Defense Authorization Bill

 WASHINGTON, DC - Late last night, legislation advanced to provide military retirement credit to National Guard soldiers for their service in disaster zones after 9/11. The provision was included in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006 (H.R. 1815), which passed the House of Representatives late last night.
