Marking the 40th Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, Rep. Carolyn Maloney Vows to Defend Both Programs for Quality Health Care for Seniors and the Disabled

 WASHINGTON, DC - Today, on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the creation of Medicare and Medicaid, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (NY) urged Congress and the administration to step up the nation’s commitment to both programs, so that they can provide another 40 years of quality health care for elderly, disabled and financially challenged Americans. President Lyndon Johnson signed the Medicare and Medicaid programs into law on July 30th, 1965.

Victory for New York in Federal Transportation Bill

 WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (NY) joined several members of the New York Congressional delegation in announcing a victory for New York in increased funding levels authorized for the State in today’s Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (TEA-LU), as agreed upon by a conference committee of House and Senate legislators. Because earlier versions of the bill have already passed the House and Senate, final approval by Congress on today’s compromise legislation is widely anticipated.

Congresswoman Maloney Gets Top Rating From Hispanic Leadership Group

Eliminating Hidden Overdraft Fees for Bank Customers

 WASHINGTON, DC - To end the practice of banks charging $25 to $35 for overdraft protection that consumers never requested in the first place, new congressional legislation would give bank customers more control over and knowledge about their bank accounts. Equality for Iraqi Women is in Jeopardy

 WASHINGTON, DC - With the deadline for ratification of Iraq’s new constitution rapidly approaching, and with women’s groups protesting a potential loss of rights, Members of Congress are urging President Bush to actively support equal rights for women in Iraq (PDF of letter: (Download related PDF file)). Last week, women’s groups in Iraq took to the street to protest the current draft version of the constitution. The New York Times reported that, under the draft, Islamic “Shariah” law would supercede the constitution’s protections for women, particularly in such areas as divorce and inheritance.
