NY Reps: Screen All Airline Cargo

QUEENS, NY - Today, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Congressman Anthony Weiner expressed their strong support for legislation that would require the Department of Homeland Security to inspect all cargo before it is transported on passenger planes. Members of Congress Ask MMS About Oil Royalties Auditing Program for Tribal Land

WASHINGTON, DC - Members of Congress are expressing concern about the new federal program for collecting mineral royalties owed on Tribal and Indian lands. Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), joined by Reps. Henry Waxman (D-CA), George Miller (D-CA), Edward Markey (D-MA), Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ), and Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), have asked Johnnie Burton, Director of the Minerals Management Service (MMS), for answers (letter to Burton: http://maloney.house.gov/documents/govreform/oil/20060403ltrMMS.pdf). MMS’s new program, which was initiated in 2001, focuses on compliance reviews of company royalty reports rather than full audits conducted under U.S. Government Auditing Standards. Compliance desk reviews are also being used for collecting royalties owed federal taxpayers and State governments.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Representatives Christopher Shays (R-CT), Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Tom Udall (D-NM) introduced legislation that strengthens the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board and requires the President to provide a specific funding line for the Board.  The 9-11 Commission Civil Liberties Board Act addresses the concerns the 9/11 Commission expressed in their Final Report Card, in which the Administration received a "D" for its "very little urgency" and "insufficient" funding for the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board.
