CONGRESSIONAL SUBCOMMITTEE SCHEDULES NEW YORK CITY HEARING ON SEPTEMBER 11th Health Effects

Washington, D.C.-US Rep. Christopher Shays (CT-4), Chairman of the Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations, today announced the panel will convene an oversight hearing in New York City to examine the short and long term health effects of the September 11th attack on Ground Zero workers, and steps taken by the federal and local government to diagnose and provide treatment to those affected.

IN SUPPLEMENTAL, AMENDMENT PASSED TO ASSIST AFGHAN WOMEN AND GIRLS

WASHINGTON, DC - Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14) successfully attached an amendment to the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations bill today that would ensure that Afghan women and girls receive much needed assistance. The Maloney amendment, offered with Reps. Henry Hyde (IL-06), Tom Lantos (CA-12), and Judy Biggert (IL-13), will direct $60 million of the reconstruction aid for Afghanistan to programs that benefit Afghan women and girls. The amendment further specifies that $5 million will go to the National Human Rights Commission of Afghanistan to combat human rights abuses.

NEW YORK VETERANS RALLY TO SAVE MANHATTAN VA HOSPITAL

NY, NY (Oct. 7, 2003): Today, in front of the Manhattan VA Hospital at 23rd St. and 1st Ave. in Manhattan, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (NY), City Council Speaker Gifford Miller, and Council Member Margarita López stood with veterans from all over New York City to demand that the U.S. Veterans Administration (VA) retract a proposal that would eviscerate health care services at the vital Manhattan medical facility for veterans.

ARE WE BEING SHORTCHANGED ON 9/11 RECOVERY?

WASHINGTON, DC - Concerns that New Yorkers will never see all of the $21.4 billion promised to them for 9/11 recovery have been validated by a brand new General Accounting Office (GAO) report ( http://maloney.house.gov/sites/maloney.house.gov/files/documents/olddocs/Sept11/NYLibertyZoneGAO.pdf ). Specifically, the report, requested by Reps. Carolyn Maloney (Manhattan and Queens) and Charles Rangel (Harlem), states that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is not keeping tabs on how much of the Liberty Zone tax benefits are being used, and that there will never be adequate actual accounting for this aid.

Maloney's Legislation to Stop Rape Crimes

WASHINGTON, DC - Congress took a giant step towards the arrest and conviction of thousands of rapists who will be caught through the improved use of DNA technology this week. Debbie Smith, a rape survivor and advocate for stronger use of DNA evidence in sexual assault investigations, and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (NY-14), the original author of "The Debbie Smith Act," joined Sens. Orrin Hatch (UT), Joseph Biden (DE), and Patrick Leahy (VT), and Reps. James Sensenbrenner (WI-05), William Delahunt (MA-10), Ray LaHood (IL-18), and John Conyers (MI-14) on October 1, 2003 to announce the introduction of the "Advancing Justice Through DNA Technology Act of 2003." The bipartisan legislation will ensure that DNA evidence is used to send rapists to prison and to protect the innocent from wrongful convictions.

LEADER OF INTOLERANT ORGANIZATION TO REPRESENT U.S. AT ORGANIZATION FOR INTERNATIONAL TOLERANCE?
