Chairwoman Johnson, Ranking Member Cardin and the rest of the Committee members, thank you for allowing me to testify before you. Today we are discussing the role of the government in the area of child care, an issue I have been working on all of my political life.
Mr. Chairman, Mrs. Maloney, Mr. Davis, thank you for this opportunity to present and answer questions on the Census 2000 Operation Plan, first sent to you six weeks ago, and now refined to incorporate the evaluation based on the Census Bureau's Dress Rehearsal experience. I have submitted written testimony, and will now more briefly comment on issues raised in the letter of invitation to appear before this Subcommittee.

Reps. Carolyn B. Maloney and Thomas J. Manton announced today that Community School District #30 in Queens has been selected to receive more than $2 million in funding for FY98 under the Magnet Schools Assistance Program. Over the next three years, the District is slated to receive $6.8 million, subject to Congressional appropriations.
