WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. House of Representatives voted today 252-165 to pass the Hyde-Lantos-Sweeney Amendment which calls for the U.S. to hold our arrears to the United Nations hostage, as retribution for being voted off the United Nations Human Rights Commission. Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) led the opposition to the Amendment, arguing that the U.S. should not be in the business of backing out of deals with our international colleagues. The United Nations is in Mrs. Maloney's district.

WASHINGTON, DC - Senator Robert G. Torricelli (D-NJ) and Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) today introduced legislation to ensure that individuals at high risk for osteoporosis have access to screening tests for the disease. The Early Detection and Prevention of Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases Act of 2001 will require private insurance plans to cover bone mass (bone density) measurement testing for those at risk for developing the disease.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D- Manhattan, Queens) voted for and spoke in favor of the Comprehensive Retirement Security and Pension Reform Act, legislation that will raise the amount that individuals are permitted to contribute to IRA plans to $5,000 and 401(k) plans to $15,000. The bill also includes important pension portability and catch-up contribution provisions for workers who are 50 or older so that individuals who have been out of the workforce for a number of years, especially women who have raised families, can build their own nest eggs.

NEW YORK: Today, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY) released a United States Congressional Report that shows overcrowding in a staggering 85% of kindergarten through third grade classrooms in Manhattan school districts one through four. Parents and school officials joined Representative Maloney at P.S. 290 in District 2, to discuss the challenges they face in providing high-quality learning environments for students, while dealing with a teacher shortage, severely limited space for new classrooms, and a growing student population. The report, done through the Committee on Government Reform & Oversight at the request of Representative Maloney, also shows that more than a third of these classrooms are extremely overcrowded according to established national standards.
