WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), ranking member of the Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee, today called for Elizabeth Warren to be nominated permanent Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) at an oversight hearing of the subcommittee.
WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) today introduced an amendment in the House Financial Services Committee to H.R. 839, "The HAMP Termination Act of 2011" sponsored by Patrick McHenry (R-NC), whose bill would abolish the “Housing Affordable Modification Program” which was established to assist three to four million homeowners in achieving mortgage modifications. The Maloney Amendment would extend the program to accommodate 500,000 more mortgages before it ends.
“At best, this bill is a penny-wise-and-pound-foolish attempt to cut spending; in reality it will make things worse in the housing market. My amendment would help 500,000 more homeowners get the help they truly need and help stem the overall slide in the market,” Maloney said. “Recent housing price reports show that we are still dealing with the aftermath the housing bubble. Homeowners need more help. But the bills being debated in this committee eliminate most of the help that currently exists, and that’s just crazy. The prospect of more foreclosures which will further depress housing prices—that’s not what America needs right now.”
WASHINGTON, DC – Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), and Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) today sent letters requesting hearings to assess potential concerns with hydraulic fracturing of natural gas before relevant House Committees. They issued the following joint statement about the letters:
“We hope that both Committees will hold hearings to determine whether our drinking water is safe. If federal and state regulations have not kept pace with this growing industry, we need to know before it creates a public health concern. As Representatives from New York, we are especially concerned given that some of the wastewater from hydrofracking is being transported to public sewage plants in our state. By holding hearings, Congress, the industry, and the public would have a better understanding of wastewater treatment and what further Congressional action is needed.”
The text of Rep. Maloney’s speech introducing Ms. Katanakis follows.
“The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is discriminatory and today President Obama agreed, ordering the Justice Department to stop defending DOMA in the federal courts.
“This decision marks a victory for the LGBT community and for all Americans who believe in civil rights and equality under the Constitution. Throughout my entire career in public service, no one has ever asked me to defend their marriage -- but countless same-sex couples have spoken poignantly to me of their efforts to secure legal recognition and protections for their own families. That’s why I applaud today’s move by the Obama administration to stop defending the indefensible.
“While this decision does not repeal a law that should never have passed -- and that I voted against -- those of us fighting for marriage equality can take heart in this significant step toward a time when all families are treated equally under the law.”
