STATEMENT ON THE UNTIMELY DEATH OF JOHN F. KENNEDY, JR.
If there is one bright point that has arisen from the untimely and unexpected death of John F. Kennedy, Jr. it is the unearthing of his many marvelous acts of humanity, which until recently had been uncelebrated, cloaked in John Kennedy Jr.'s humility.
Kennedy quietly fought for the people and places of New York City. Kennedy was only 28 when he founded Reaching Up, an organization that provided education, work training, and self-esteem development for people young and old facing disadvantage.
I honor the legacy of public service exemplified by the Kennedy family, and honor their strength in the presence of death. My prayers are with John F. Kennedy Jr.’s family and the Bessette family, whose loss of not one but two daughters is a tremendous tragedy. As a nation, I hope that we find solace in the belief that John Kennedy Jr. and his parents are united and looking down upon us today.
