New York, NY - "With the passing of Henry B. Gonzalez our country has lost a true American hero. Since coming to Washington during the Kennedy Administration, Chairman Gonzalez worked tirelessly as an advocate for the poor and disenfranchised. He will be long remembered for his successful leadership as Chairman of the Banking Committee and his willingness to take up causes and spearhead investigations of subjects that others were afraid to approach.

"As Chairman of the Banking Committee, Henry B. Gonzalez passed major legislation resolving the savings and loan crisis, improving public housing and increasing consumer access to credit. He led investigations of Charles Keating, BCCI and Iraq/BNL and he pressed the Federal Reserve to make changes in monetary policy public on a same-day basis.

"I was honored to serve with Henry B. Gonzalez whose work changed our country forever and whose spirit lives on. My heart goes out to the people of San Antonio and the incomparable Gonzalez family."
