WASHINGTON, D.C. - This morning, after attending a press conference with Vice President Gore and Senate and House Democrats, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) released the following statement:

"Morally bankrupt perpetrators of clinic violence should not be able to hide behind the bankruptcy code.

"The Vice President left New York City today, in the heat of a tough campaign, to protect a woman's right to choose. This is just another example of Al Gore standing up, in the face of obstacles and extremist, anti-choice politics, for choice.

"The next election is key. With Roe v. Wade dangling by just a single Supreme Court vote, and a number of vacancies on the bench perilously likely, whether or not we elect a pro-choice President in 2000 will literally determine if we keep or lose women's most essential right: the right to choose."

Congresswoman Maloney is the Democratic Chair of the Women's Caucus and an outspoken defender of the Vice President's record on reproductive rights.
