Rep. Maloney Statement on the Reported Murder of Journalist Jamal Khashoggi
“Jamal Khashoggi knew that without freedom of expression and freedom of the press, the world, and especially Saudi Arabia, could not and would not move toward more free societies. For this, and for speaking truth to power, he was viciously murdered.
“The day that Mr. Khashoggi went missing, it was clear that Saudi Arabia was behind his murder. In the days since, evidence emerged that the Kingdom’s Crown Prince had ordered the operation to lure Mr. Khashoggi to its embassy in Istanbul. This brazen, blatant and brutal murder must be unequivocally condemned for the the gross human rights violation that it is and Saudi Arabia must be held accountable. I have long believed the U.S. needed to end its support for Saudi operations in the war in Yemen and doing so is even more important now. I also believe the U.S. should suspend arm sales to the Kingdom and impose additional sanctions to make it clear that we will not tolerate such human rights abuses, even from our so-called allies.
“Unfortunately, the President has persistently refused to condemn this murder or stand up for the values for which Mr. Khashoggi was killed. This is not just disappointing, but a dereliction of duty from the leader of the free world that will further harm our country’s moral standing with other nations.
“Every people which stands for freedom must come together to hold Saudi Arabia accountable and demand justice for Jamal Khashoggi.”
