Rep. Maloney Statement on the Murder of George Floyd

May 29, 2020
Press Release

The murder of George Floyd is sickening and gut-wrenching. His life was stolen by an officer whose duty was supposed to be to serve and protect, not to brutalize and kill. I am relieved to see that this officer was finally arrested and charged today, but so much more must be done to stop our nation’s vicious cycle of police brutality.

For over 400 years, Black Americans have been treated as less than equal. They have been enslaved, murdered, profiled, discriminated against, and fallen victim to our criminal justice system. While police brutality, white supremacy, and racism are certainly not new to our nation- footage of these incidents means more people are exposed to the violence and discrimination so many Black people face every day.

But it should not take a viral video or national outcry to recognize the reality of police brutality, or to ensure justice is served.

We can never bring George back, but our nation can finally tackle this crisis that has taken the lives of so many innocent Black people and robbed their communities. We must do more to hold our police officers accountable, and to dismantle the racist power structures that allow this kind of violence to fester.

I stand in solidarity with George’s loved ones, family, and community who are demanding justice, and I will do everything in my power to see that justice is served.

The brutal slayings we’ve witnessed in recent weeks are almost too much to bear, but now more than ever we cannot be silent or turn our heads to tragedy.

George Floyd’s life mattered, Breonna Taylor’s life mattered, Ahmaud Arbery’s life mattered- all Black lives matter.
