Rep. Maloney Statement on the Death of Gabe Pressman
New York City – After learning of the death of newsman Gabe Pressman, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12) issued the following statement:
“I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Gabe Pressman, a senior correspondent for WNBC-TV, and one of the most trustworthy guide-stars in New York City’s storied constellation of great television reporters.
“In an industry that has sometimes been criticized for a degree of ‘sameness’ in looks and manners, Gabe Pressman was a true original. A hometown boy from the Bronx and a graduate of NYU, he knew this city like the back of his hand. He was fiercely committed to telling the truth about the city he loved.
“He was one of the first reporters in television to go out on the streets with a camera crew in tow to report from the scene of news events. He showed neither fear nor favor when he interviewed major newsmakers from Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir to Malcom X, from Bella Abzug to President Bill Clinton.
“Whether you were a political leader or a private citizen, you knew that if Gabe Pressman was there sticking a microphone in your face, you had best tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. We have never been in greater need of people in his mold. He will be sorely missed. My most sincerely condolences to his family and all who loved him.”
