New York—Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12) released the following statement ahead of St. Patrick’s Day 2017:

“In celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, we celebrate the strength, tenacity and fighting spirit of the Irish culture that is shared by their New York brothers and sisters. A huge thank you and congratulations to the parade’s Grand Marshal Michael J. Dowling, president and chief executive officer of Northwell Health, and all those who have worked so hard in preparing such a wonderful event.

“Since the colonial period the Irish have been an integral part of American history and especially New York City, and we continue to have the largest Irish-American Community in America. The story of the Irish in this city of immigrants is an important lesson for today, as some political leaders seek to close borders and build walls. When Irish immigrants started arriving in huge numbers during the 19th century, many faced brutal discrimination, but the community persisted and ultimately thrived. In the process they helped build New York into the greatest city on earth. So although the flight from Islamabad may differ from the steamer from Cork, let us remember that in America we are all immigrants.”
