Rep. Maloney Statement on Hearing with FBI Director Comey

Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC — Following today’s Emergency Hearing with FBI Director James Comey hearing in the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12), senior member of the committee released the following statement:

“Today’s hearing was just another example of a Republican exercise in partisan politics. FBI Director James Comey was very clear and forthcoming in his statement on Tuesday about not only the investigation’s process but the results of this line of inquiry and therefore the FBI’s recommendation that the Justice Department not press charges.

“Now, the Republicans’ reaction to this case is the mother of all flip flops. Up until Tuesday morning, Republicans made supportive statement after statement about how Director Comey is impartial and independent and then the moment he announced his recommendation they completely changed their tune, even though just last month Chaffetz claimed on Fox News that Republicans ‘believe in James Comey’ because ‘in all of the government, he is a man of integrity and honesty.’ Now, they’re on a political witch hunt to invalidate the impartial and diligent work done by the FBI in order to win the election and help Donald Trump become President.

“Unfortunately, comments made in today’s hearing seem to indicate that we will have even more hearings on this issue. Instead of wasting taxpayer’s money on further investigations, let’s turn our attention to the emergencies we must address – gun safety, job creation, national security and the economy.”
