Rep. Maloney Lauds Announcement of Congressional Hearing on the ERA
NEW YORK, NY – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, sponsor of H.J.Res.35 - the Equal Rights Amendment, released the following statement after Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) announced that the House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on the Equal Rights Amendment on April 30, 2019.
“In just two weeks, the House will hold the first official hearing on the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in 36 years – a hearing that is long overdue. I’m so proud to have an ally like House Judiciary Committee Chairman Nadler supporting the ERA. Last year, I teamed up with the ERA Coalition to hold a ‘shadow hearing’ so that other members could hear from witnesses as to why an ERA is so important and why it has seen a resurgence in recent years.
“With issues of equality at the forefront of today’s conversations; with the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, with the Women’s Marches and more women than ever before running for and being elected to office – we have an extraordinary responsibility and opportunity to seize this moment and make lasting change by finally ratifying the ERA.”
The Equal Rights Amendment would prohibit denying or abridging equal rights under the law by the United States or any state because of sex. Currently, the only right that the Constitution explicitly guarantees women is the right to vote. There has not been a Congressional hearing on the ERA since 1984.
