Meng, Maloney, Nadler and Velázquez Stand with Macy's Workers
Today, U.S. Reps. Grace Meng (D-NY), Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and Nydia Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following joint statement in support of Macy’s workers seeking an a new contract:
“We applaud Macy’s success, profitability and leadership in the retail industry, as well as its identification as an important New York City landmark. However, we are deeply concerned about today’s contract extension deadline, with unresolved key points necessary for a strong and efficient workforce, including:
- A healthcare plan that is affordable and comprehensive
- Adequate pay increases and no change in the commission structure;
- The continuation of giving workers the option to work on holidays;
- Maintaining the current pension plan for senior employees; and
- Maintaining the composition of the current bargaining unit.
What makes Macy’s so successful is its workforce—a workforce that provides outstanding customer service and introduces thousands every day to the Macy’s and New York experience. Macy’s workers are essential to the success and growth of the company and they deserve a new contract that provides living wages and benefits. With the current contract extension set to expire, it is critical that a new agreement be reached as soon as possible. These workers have earned nothing less than a fair contract for their hard work and dedication to Macy’s.
We firmly believe it is in the public interest to protect middle class jobs, safeguard fair working conditions and collective bargaining rights, and ensure high quality retail services to New York City’s residents and tourists. We urge the parties to negotiate in good faith and agree to a fair contract. We urge Macy’s to continue its history of providing industry-leading wages, hours, medical and pension benefits, and working conditions for its employees.”
