MALONEY STATEMENT ON RECORD LOW POVERTY STATISTICS

Sep 26, 2000
Press Release
Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Ranking Member of the Census Subcommittee, released the following statement on today's announcement by the Census Bureau that the poverty rate is at a 20-year low and household income is at record highs.

"This it is exceptionally good news. It is all the more startling given the fact that the Clinton administration began using statistically corrected census data in 1994.

"That year, the poverty statistic actually increased by about 1.1 million people.

"The Clinton Administration had the courage to use the most accurate data available, It's just a shame that some in Congress don't want to use the most accurate data available."
