WASHINGTON-- Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) offered the following statement in response to President Obama's speech on immigration today:

"President Obama spoke today about what’s truly at stake if we do not reform our broken immigration system and reminded us that our nation’s history is rooted in the strength of immigrants.
"As New Yorkers, my constituents have a special understanding of how America’s melting pot can create a rich tapestry of ethnic, cultural and religious traditions that infuse vitality into the economic and social aspects of our communities.

"I was proud to support the DREAM Act that passed the Democratic House last year though, due to Republican obstruction, did not advance in the Senate.  We must provide a path to legal status for undocumented youth who entered the U.S. as children, without a choice, and who wish to go on to attend college or serve in the military.

"Now, with President Obama’s bold plan of action and commitment to real reform, it is time for Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform, protecting the rights of workers, securing the border, and modernizing our pathway to legal immigration."
