Maloney statement on September jobs report
WASHINGTON- Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), the Ranking House Member of the Joint Economic Committee, today released the following statement on the Department of Labor Jobs report, which indicates a 55th consecutive month of private sector job growth. The economy added 248,000 jobs and the unemployment rate dropped to 5.9 percent.
“More than 10 million new jobs have been created since the 2008 economic meltdown and the unemployment rate has now reached a six year low. Our economy has proved remarkably resilient in the face of a gridlocked congress, which shut down the government and has failed to take up important measures like investments in infrastructure and education, and comprehensive immigration reform.
“Although our economy continues to grow, the gains are not widely shared. The adage that a rising tide lifts all boats has not proved true in the most recent recovery. Many American families still struggle to make ends meet and wages have not kept pace with the growing cost of food, housing, energy and other basics. It’s long past time for Congress to act and help correct this wrong, because a strong America requires a strong middle class.”
