Maloney statement on December employment report
WASHINGTON – Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Ranking House Member of the Joint Economic Committee, issued the following statement on the December Employment Report.
“After 46 consecutive months of private sector job growth and 8.2 million jobs created during that time, the unemployment rate is now at its lowest point since October 2008. We’ve come a long way, but we still have a long way to go.
“Congress needs to work together on a comprehensive jobs plan to address high unemployment. In the meantime, important elements of our safety net, like unemployment insurance and nutrition assistance, need to be strengthened so that those struggling to find a job can keep a roof over their head and food on the table. These benefits should not be allowed to expire for those in need until the ratio of job seekers to job openings has returned to normal levels.”
