WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) released the following statement after the Congress completed the electoral college certification process following the attack on the Capitol today by Pro-Trump rioters.

“This past Sunday, I stood with my colleagues to take my oath of office, during which we all swore to ‘support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.’

“Members restate this oath at the beginning of every Congress to which we are elected – it serves as a reminder of the solemn obligation to which we commit ourselves, our work, and our lives. Today, as we certified the results of a free and fair election – despite the verbal assaults from our President and the physical assault from his followers – we carried out that responsibility in honor of our democracy and an unbroken history of a peaceful transfer of power.

“Today, those who attacked and terrorized the Capitol Building tried to stop that peaceful transfer of power, but we cannot and will not allow them to win.

“I am deeply troubled by the pain and terror wreaked on our Capitol and our nation today and over the last four years, and know that it will take hard work, unwavering dedication, and many difficult conversations to heal the divisions that currently plague our country.

“But as we move forward under the leadership of a new administration, I remain hopeful that we can create a renewed sense of unity as we strive towards a more perfect union, with liberty and justice for all its people.”
