New York, NY – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn) condemned the recent attack on Sarker Haque, owner of Fatima Food Market, on 21st Avenue in Astoria, which is being investigated as a hate crime because the perpetrator reportedly said : “I kill Muslims,” as he repeatedly punched Mr. Haque in the head:

“I am appalled by the recent attack on Sarker Haque, a store owner in the area I represent,” said Congresswoman Maloney.  “I am even more appalled that the attacker allegedly targeted Mr. Haque for being a Muslim.  Our nation is built on the bedrock principle of tolerance and acceptance for all religions.  Attacking someone for their religion is deeply un-American and unacceptable.  I hope law enforcement takes this matter very seriously and prosecutes the perpetrator to the full extent allowed by law.  My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Haque and his family, and I hope they understand how emphatically our community stands with them and rejects the sentiments that led to this unconscionable attack.”
