Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) released the following statement today after President Biden announced new actions to protect Americans and help communities and hospitals battle the COVID-19 Omicron variant:

“President Biden’s announcement today is good news for New York and the nation. It is exactly what we need right now as we face a surge of the COVID Omicron variant. These actions from the President will increase access to free testing, bring more support to hospitals, and expand our capacity to get shots in arms. This includes deploying medical personnel across the country, expanding hospital capacity, opening emergency testing sites in hard-hit communities, and purchasing 500 million at-home rapid COVID tests for distribution to Americans who want them. I am especially thankful for the aid that will be coming directly to New York, including a new federal testing site in New York City by Christmas and 30 crewed ambulances.

“We now have tools to effectively combat this wave of the pandemic. For any New Yorker who has not been vaccinated and received a booster shot, I urge you to get vaccinated as soon as possible – for the health and safety of our communities and yourself.

“While this variant is a cause for concern and must be taken seriously, it is not a time to panic. We have the tools, we have the knowledge, and we have the planning capabilities to get through this. I commend the President on these monumental steps to keep New Yorkers and every American safe this winter.”

President Biden today announced new actions following the increased presence of the COVID-19 Omicron variant throughout the United States ahead of the holidays:

  • More Free Testing
    • Federal emergency testing sites will be setup in hard-hit areas, starting in NYC this week.
    • The federal government will purchase a half-billion at-home, rapid tests to be distributed for free to Americans that want them. Initial delivery is expected to start in January 2022.

  • More support for Hospitals
    • The President will deploy 1,000 military doctors, nurses, and medics to staff local hospitals.
    • He will deploy teams to setup more hospital beds.
    • He will deploy hundreds of ambulances and EMS crews to help transport patients to open beds.
    • He will preposition supplies from the Strategic National Stockpile -- masks, gloves, gowns, and ventilators – so that if a hospital runs out, the federal government can get those supplies to States that need them immediately.

  • More Shots in Arms
    • The President is deploying hundreds of more vaccinators.
    • The federal government is standing up new pop-up vaccination clinics nationwide.
    • Pharmacies are adding appointments and capacity across their networks.
