Congresswoman Maloney Celebrates Diwali
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) today released the following statement in celebration of Diwali, which begins tomorrow, November 14, 2020. Congresswoman Maloney successfully worked with advocates across the country and led efforts in Congress urging the U.S. Postal Service to approve and issue a commemorative stamp honoring Diwali, which has been in circulation since 2016.
“I wish a Happy Diwali to all those celebrating around the world this weekend as we begin the time of reflection and renewal that marks the Hindu New Year. This beautiful festival celebrates lightness over dark, goodness over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. As communities across the country come together to celebrate, let us turn our own efforts so that goodness and righteousness guide us toward a better future in which light sustains and nourishes us even in the bleakest of times. Happy Diwali and Saal Mubarak!”
For several years, Congresswoman Maloney headed efforts in Congress to push the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) to consider issuing a commemorative Diwali stamp. In 2013, Congresswoman Maloney first introduced H.Res. 47, expressing the sense of the U.S. House of Representatives that the CSAC should issue a Diwali stamp. The resolution had 46 cosponsors. Maloney reintroduced the resolution in 2015 as H.Res. 32, which had 71 cosponsors. Maloney additionally wrote letters to the CSAC in 2010 and 2012 requesting approval of a Diwali commemorative stamp. The Diwali Commemorative Stamp was first issued in 2016.
