Congresswoman Maloney Calls for Re-Opening of Shuttered Engine 261 Firehouse in Long Island City
NEW YORK—Today, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-12), called for the City of New York to reopen Engine 261 in Long Island City, which has been closed since 2003. Over the last 14 years, LIC has become the fastest growing neighborhood in the city, with an increasing population and growing commercial sector. Reopening Engine 261 will ensure that the City has the capacity maintain prompt response times to structural fires and medical emergencies.
“There is nothing more important to me than ensuring the health and safety of the people I’m privileged to represent,” said Congresswoman Maloney. “I am concerned that while the population of L.I.C. has been growing, the facilities needed to keep these residents safe have not been keeping pace. That is why I am calling for the Engine 261 Firehouse to be reopened. When the Engine was closed in May of 2003, there was an immediate and dramatic effect on average response times in our area, and in an emergency situation every second counts. That is why I am joining the rally cry to reopen the Engine 261 Firehouse. We must do all we can to keep our citizens safe.”
