Chairwoman Maloney Hails Passage of the Women’s Health Protection Act
Washington, D.C. (September 24, 2021)—Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the historic Women’s Health Protection Act to establish a federally protected right to abortion.
“Today, the House of Representatives took a crucial step to safeguard the right to access abortion care in the United States. Accessing abortion has been recognized as a constitutional right for nearly half a century, yet this right is now under sustained attack by anti-choice state legislatures and a hostile Supreme Court.
“Next week, I will hold a hearing in the Oversight Committee to examine the grave threat to abortion rights and access in Texas and across the country. Next week’s hearing will show why my colleagues in the Senate must pass the Women’s Health Protection Act immediately to protect the fundamental right to access abortion regardless of a person’s zip code or income. We must not go back. The time for action is now.”
On September 30, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. ET the Committee on Oversight and Reform will hold a hearing to examine the current threats to abortion rights and access. The hearing will also evaluate actions the federal government can take to protect the right to abortion and expand access in light of these existential threats—including enacting the Women’s Health Protection Act and putting a long-overdue end to the Hyde Amendment.
