Washington, D.C. – Today, House Republicans blocked legislation to extend federal unemployment benefits for three months, despite the positive impact that unemployment benefits have in stimulating the economy. U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) voted for the legislation, which would have prevented an estimated 160,000 unemployed workers in New York State, including 95,000 in New York City, from losing their benefits by the end of the year.

Carolyn Maloney today urged Queens residents who think they may have missed their tax refund check to contact the IRS immediately, either by telephone at 1-800-829-1954 or on the Internet by clicking on the Where’s My Refund? button on www.irs.gov. The IRS reports that the tax refund checks of 1,231 Queens residents, worth a total of more than $2 million, were returned to the agency because of mailing address errors.

The IRS reports that the tax refund checks of 2,059 Manhattan residents, worth a total of $5.65 million, were returned to the agency because of mailing address errors.

Carolyn Maloney, Jerrold Nadler, and Peter King, authors of H.R. 847, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, wrote to federal 9/11 Health Coordinator Dr. John Howard this week and urged him to develop autopsy guidelines that would help doctors better understand the effects of 9/11-related illnesses and track deaths that may have been caused by exposures to toxins released by the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. The federal government began work to develop such guidelines several years ago, but the guidelines were never completed. A full copy of the lawmakers’ letter to Dr. Howard can be found below.

The purpose of this “third wave” survey is to track the health of and identify new health conditions affecting those who were exposed to Ground Zero toxins.

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) today reacted to the Social Security Administration’s announcement today that there will be no cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to next year’s social security checks.

“This announcement is disappointing but not a surprise, given the very low rate of inflation as it is calculated,” Rep. Maloney said. “That’s why I’m gratified that Speaker Pelosi has committed to moving ahead with legislation later this year that will provide Social Security recipients with a one-time $250 payment in 2011.”
