The GOP Tax Scam
Today, the House voted – for the third and final time – on the deeply flawed and misguided Republican tax bill. In this case, the third time was definitely not the charm. This bill is not reform, it is a scam that is particularly cruel to New York – which is why I voted no all three times.
Under this GOP tax scam, New Yorkers will end up being double-taxed because the bill guts the State and Local Tax deduction that so many of us rely on. Thanks to this scam, 86 million middle-class Americans across the country will see their taxes go up and another 13 million will lose their health insurance.
As if all of this weren’t bad enough, this GOP bill will increase the national debt by at least a trillion dollars over the next decade. All of this is being done to pay for a partisan proposal to provide tax breaks to big business and the fortunate few. Our country and our families deserve a better deal that gives relief to middle class families and small businesses without burdening future generations with a mountain of new debt.
NPR published this great explainer of the differences between current law and what the GOP tax bill will enact. I hope you find it useful. If you have any questions about this bill, or any other federal matter affecting you, please don’t hesitate to call my office at 212-860-0606 or 202-225-7944.
