Rep. Maloney and students rallying at the Capitol to say “Enough is Enough.”
Today, students across this country walked out of their classes to make one thing very clear; they want gun safety reforms and they want them now. I do too. That’s why I walked out of a Congressional Hearing today and joined students at a rally in front the Capitol to demand action.
Gun safety reforms should be at the top of Congress’ to-do list. Yesterday, 7,000 pairs of shoes took over the lawn in front of the Capitol, representing the 7,000 children that have been killed by gun violence since the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012. That’s 7,000 lives cut short, birthdays missed, dreams left unrealized.
For 17 minutes today, the world stood silent in honor of the 17 lives lost on February 14 in Parkland, Florida. But, that is the end of our silence. Enough is enough.
Enough of the GOP refusing to stand up to the NRA. Enough of sending thoughts and prayers without actions to make a difference. Enough lives senselessly lost.
Today, these students showed us all that they, and their determination, aren’t going way. They aren't just the future's leaders, they're today's leaders.
I have and will continue to fight for common sense gun safety reforms. You can read more about the bills I’ve authored and other proposals I’m supporting on my website.
Together, we can and we will make a difference.
Carolyn B. Maloney
