It's Time for Bipartisan Work on Healthcare
The latest version of the Republican’s cruel healthcare bill, the Better Care Reconciliation Act, is going nowhere for the moment after two more Senate Republicans came out in opposition last night. But the fight to protect and strengthen the Affordable Care Act is not over yet.
Senate Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is now working on a bill to simply repeal the ACA without any replacement, which would end up hurting far more people than any of the other Republican healthcare plans that we’ve seen so far. If the ACA is repealed without a replacement, more than 32 million Americans would lose health insurance and premiums would go up 100%, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.
Our country cannot afford this plan and we cannot afford this gridlock to go on any further. It’s time for Republicans to drop their ACA repeal efforts and work with Democrats to craft a bill to improve healthcare for all Americans and improve the Affordable Care Act’s shortcomings.
Our most important duty as elected representatives is to provide for the safety and security of the American people and I stand ready to do just that. I hope we can work in a bipartisan way on a new bill because I, and every other Democrat in Congress, will continue to oppose any bill that takes away care for any American, cuts Medicaid, or targets children, veterans, seniors or Americans with disabilities.
