I’m writing today to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving and to give you an update on what I’ve been up to this (short) week ahead of the holiday.
Suing AG Barr and Sec. Ross
On Tuesday, I filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of the Committee on Oversight and Reform against Attorney General Bill Barr and Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross for refusing to produce documents regarding the Administration’s effort to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census.
My friend and mentor Chairman Elijah Cummings launched our committee’s bipartisan investigation because the Constitution requires Congress to ensure that the rapidly approaching Census is conducted in a professional manner that promotes accuracy, ensures integrity, and is free from partisan politics. And yet, since the Supreme Court ruled against them—and the House of Representatives held them in contempt for blocking the Committee’s investigation—Attorney General Barr and Commerce Secretary Ross have doubled down on their open defiance of the rule of law and refused to produce even a single additional document in response to our Committee’s bipartisan subpoenas.
And so, we have now turned to the courts because the Trump Administration’s brazen obstruction of Congress cannot stand. President Trump and his aides are not above the law. They cannot be allowed to disregard and degrade the authority of Congress to fulfill our core Constitutional legislative and oversight responsibilities.
Report on Child Separations
Today, the Inspector General (IG) of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a new report detailing how the Trump Administration separated children from their families even though they knew they could not track them.
The report affirms what we already know; that the Administration’s cruelty, incompetence, and indifference led to the suffering of children who were taken from their parents under President Trump’s child separation policy.
Previous independent reports showed that the Administration failed to track these children, and now we know why—a rush to execute a callous and unnecessary policy and a willful blindness to known problems. This report reveals that the Administration planned to separate tens of thousands of additional kids before public outrage and a federal court forced them to retreat. We will continue to hold this administration to account for this horrific policy and until all these children are returned to their families. The Committee on Oversight and Reform has been investigating the zero tolerance policy and its implementation and we will continue until we get the whole truth.
East River Greenway Groundbreaking
This week I joined community partners and elected officials to break ground on the newest phase of the East River Greenway! For far too long, areas of Manhattan have lacked accessible waterfront public space for enjoyment and safe travel. This exciting investment in our community means that soon our neighbors all along the East Side of Manhattan will be able to enjoy waterfront greenspace.
I am so proud to have played a part in securing this critical funding for NY-12. With this expansion, what was once a dream will become a reality.
As always, your concerns still and always will remain my top priority. Please do not hesitate to email me through my website.
