NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Retired firefighter Kenny Specht beat cancer but developed long-term problems less than two years ago.

“I have COPD, I have RADS…Restricted Airway Disease Syndrome,” Specht said. “But the Zadroga Bill has allowed me and certainly through the New York City Fire Department to allow the New York City Fire Department Medical Office to remain open.”

The law has provided treatment for 9/11 responders who are still suffering — 14 years later.

There are new faces in Congress but is the attitude the same?

As WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reports, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney is ready to convince her colleagues again.

“You know it’s the same circus, it’s different clowns.,” Maloney said. “It was a battle, it was a nine-year battle.”

The law is expiring next fall and lobbying to extend it is underway.
