WASHINGTON, DC - Rep. Carolyn Maloney (Queens & Manhattan) has successfully procured $1 million in federal funding for a project to reduce traffic congestion and encourage biking, walking and the use of mass transit in and around Queens Plaza. The money was included in the Omnibus Appropriations bill that passed Congress on Friday (HR 4818), and will implement the first phase of a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) project aimed at improving air quality and minimizing vehicular traffic.

WASHINGTON, DC - To determine when New York City will receive the flu vaccine it has purchased from European suppliers, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (Manhattan, Queens) has officially requested a timeline of the process from Acting Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Lester Crawford (PDF of letter). Today’s letter follows up questions of Crawford by Maloney at a congressional hearing last week and a letter from nine members of the New York Congressional Delegation on November 15 asking Commissioner Crawford to expedite the process (PDF). New York City, working with the states of Illinois and New Mexico, has worked to acquire 200,000 does of vaccine from the European suppliers.

The funding will mark the 5th year in a row that the vitally needed mass transit project on Manhattan’s East Side has received funding from the federal government.

WASHINGTON, DC - The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has issued contracting guidelines for airport security screeners and has notified airports that they can apply for private screeners, signaling that the U.S. government is ready to give the responsibility for airport security back to private contractors three years after it assumed control. Today’s Washington Post reported that two of the major airports in the Washington, D.C. area are considering using private screeners.

The Chairs of the 9/11 Commission Caucus, Reps.
