WASHINGTON, DC - A week after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided to deny over-the-counter (OTC) status for the Plan B® contraceptive - the“Morning-After Pill” - Reps. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14), Joseph Crowley (NY-07) and 15 colleagues introduced a bill in Congress today that would direct the FDA to revisit the decision (PDF of bill). Under the legislation, the FDA would review its decision and would have to affirm that the decision was not based on politics, was based on science and conformed to FDA precedent and procedures. The FDA has drawn heavy criticism for ignoring its own scientific advisory panel, which voted 23-4 to recommend OTC status.

WASHINGTON, DC - The Department of Defense’s (DoD) Care for Victims of Sexual Assault task force released its final report on sexual assault in the military tonight (PDF of report). Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14), who has long pressed the military to combat sexual assault within its ranks, said that while she is pleased that the report has finally been released, its limited and vague recommendations are disappointing. She is also concerned that the report will not be followed by action, as has been the case many times in the past.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the Interagency Working Group (IWG) investigating Nazi war crimes released its report, U.S. Intelligence and the Nazis. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14), the author of the law that created the IWG, spoke at today’s event at the National Archives. Maloney led the House of Representatives effort to ensure that the IWG was given enough time fulfill its charter and finish its work to prepare a comprehensive, historically-accurate report on the United States’s knowledge of Nazi and Japanese war criminals. The IWG was to sunset in March 2004 – before it could thoroughly complete its work – but, Maloney worked with Senators Mike DeWine (R-OH) and Diane Feinstein (D-CA) to attach language extending it for one more year to the Omnibus Appropriations Bill (H.R. 2673).

WASHINGTON, DC - To lead the federal government’s effort to combat often-overlooked women’s health issues, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-OH) and 35 of their colleagues have introduced the “Women’s Health Office Act of 2004.” The bill would make permanent women’s health offices within five federal agencies - the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

WASHINGTON, DC - Legislation to revisit and potentially reverse the FDA’s decision not to make the Plan B® contraceptive, or “Morning-After Pill, available over-the-counter (OTC) was announced today by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14) and has already been joined by four of her colleagues. 30 days after enactment of the legislation, the FDA Commissioner would be required to review his Plan B® decision and affirm that it is not based on politics, that it is based on sound science and that it conformed to FDA precedent. Maloney plans to introduce the legislation on Thursday.

WASHINGTON, DC - The General Accounting Office (GAO) has determined that the Department of the Interior's pilot oil and gas program allowing the government to take royalties in barrels of oil rather than cash has produced mixed results, according to U.S. Representatives. WASHINGTON, DC - The Veterans’ Administration Secretary Anthony Principi today announced a plan for the VA Hospital system, which includes studying the feasibility of moving in-patient services out of the Manhattan VA Hospital to Brooklyn, and/or the feasibility of moving Brooklyn VA Hospital services to Manhattan. This follows the report of the VA’s CARES Commission, which included the same recommendation. Rep. WASHINGTON, DC - Late yesterday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided to go against the recommendation of an expert scientific panel and reject over-the-counter (OTC) status for the Plan B contraceptive, the so-called “Morning-After Pill.” In December of last year, the FDA Nonprescription Drugs and Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committees endorsed the idea of making Plan B available OTC by a 23-4 vote. Proponents of the OTC status, including Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14) who has been outspoken in her criticism of the FDA, have been concerned that the FDA would bow to political pressure from the right wing.
