WASHINGTON, DC - In a letter to Health and Human Service Secretary Tommy Thompson, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14) asked for his response to reports that an ad campaign to promote breastfeeding was watered down due to pressure from the baby formula industry (Click here). Though numerous medical studies have shown breastfeeding to be extremely beneficial for children’s health and development, an ABC News report (“Milk Money,” June 4, 2004) indicated that HHS made a number of changes to the Ad Council’s original campaign following meetings with industry officials. Meanwhile, breastfeeding advocates were not granted meetings with HHS.

WASHINGTON, DC - The Greek Cypriots’ recent vote to reject the UN settlement plan for Cyprus should be construed as opposition to the UN’s plan, not as opposition to the overall concept of ending the division of Cyprus, 95 lawmakers say in letters to President Bush, Secretary of State Powell and UN Secretary General Annan (Click here). WASHINGTON, DC - With serious questions about voter disenfranchisement particularly in the African-American and poor communities still hanging over the 2000 presidential election in Florida, Rep. Carolyn Maloney has joined an effort to have the United Nations observe this year’s presidential election. Maloney signed on to a letter sent by Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan asking him to send election observers from the UN’s Electoral Assistance Division to monitor the election on November 2.

WASHINGTON, DC - An amendment to cap the Department of Homeland Security’s ever-growing list of “high-threat” entities so that only cities truly at risk receive money from the Urban Area Security Initiative was voted down 292-113 during consideration of the Homeland Security Appropriations bill today.
