WASHINGTON, DC - The House today voted to pass H.R. 3475, the so-called “Stock Options Accounting Reform Act,” and defeated an amendment by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (NY-14) that would have preserved the long-standing authority of the Securities and Exchange Commission to set accounting standards when it determines that it is necessary “for the protection of investors or in the public interest.” Maloney said the following:
WASHINGTON, DC - Reps. Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-14) and Nita Lowey (NY-18) have introduced a Congressional resolution that would honor former President William Jefferson Clinton on the occasion of his 58th birthday celebration next month. The House has a tradition of honoring past presidents - former Presidents Ronald W. Reagan, George Herbert Walker Bush and, just this week, Gerald R. Ford have been honored by the 108th Congress on their birthdays.
WASHINGTON, DC - In the wake of sharp criticism of the Food and Drug Administration for letting politics trump science in the decision to deny over-the-counter status for the Plan B® contraceptive, Reps. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14) and Henry Waxman (CA-30) have successfully attached an amendment to the Agriculture Appropriations bill (HR 4766) today that would require the FDA to do the job it is supposed to be doing - determining what is safe and effective contraception, not what is politically expedient (PDF of amendment). There is overwhelming sentiment that the FDA did not do its job in the case of their decision on emergency contraception by ignoring its own scientific panel, which voted 23-4 in favor of over-the-counter status.
