 WASHINGTON, DC - In response to news that the U.S. Veterans Administration has scheduled a public hearing in Brooklyn on May 3, 2005 about the possible consolidation of the Manhattan VA Hospital with the VA Hospital in Brooklyn, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY) today urged Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson to direct his administration to hold public hearings on the issue in Manhattan, not only in Brooklyn, and to increase outreach to New York veterans about all public hearings on the issue and ensure a fair public review of the study before any decision is made about its recommendations.

 QUEENS, NY - Today, in the auditoriums of Long Island City High School in Queens and the Simon Baruch Middle School in Manhattan, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (NY) spoke to almost 300 New Yorkers, detailing how the President’s scheme to privatize a large portion of Social Security funds would require major cuts in guaranteed benefits to Social Security participants, while at the same time requiring the federal government to borrow trillions of dollars just to fund the risky project. Maloney said the plan could leave seniors without security and would leave the country deeply in debt.

It remains unclear what the State Department had learned about the prospects for postwar Iraq and whether they were beginning to understand that the war’s aftermath would, in fact, be messy. With Iraq still in a highly volatile and insecure state, Rep.
