WASHINGTON, DC - The Bush Administration notified Congress last night that, for the fourth consecutive year, it will withhold the United States’s $34 million contribution to UNFPA (the United Nations Population Fund). The money was appropriated by Congress in June. The administration made this determination as the world community gathers in New York for the UN’s 60th anniversary.

WASHINGTON, DC - The Food and Drug Administration has decided to delay its decision on whether to permit over-the-counter sales of the so-called Morning-After Pill, even though the agency admits that its scientists have deemed it safe for over-the-counter use. The FDA said that the application to make the Plan B contraceptive available over-the-counter only for those over 17 years of age requires a review of current regulations. The FDA had previously made assurances that it would make a decision by last week.

WASHINGTON, DC - As the fourth anniversary of 9/11 approaches, Representatives Carolyn B. Maloney (Manhattan and Queens) and Peter King (Long Island) have introduced bipartisan legislation, HR 3575, the September 11th Family Humanitarian Relief and Patriotism Act. This legislation will provide much needed relief to spouses and children of immigrants who died on 9/11, but face deportation. The September 11th Family Humanitarian Relief and Patriotism Act, would grant these family members “Green Cards”, by adjusting their immigration status to “permanent legal resident”. This would allow them to stay in the United States provided that all requirements of a permanent legal resident are followed.

Maloney (NY-14), along with the leaders of the New York City Housing Authority, celebrated the opening of the new NYCHA call center at the Ravenswood Houses in Queens. The call center will allow Queens public housing residents to schedule routine maintenance and repair of their apartments at times convenient to them, eliminating the need for residents to wait for repair workers to arrive.
