WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY) hailed the advance of millions of dollars in federal aid for the Second Avenue Subway and the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) East Side Access project in the Fiscal Year 2006 Transportation Appropriations bill. The Second Avenue subway is slated to receive $25 million and East Side Access will receive $340 million.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney announced more than $2.2 million in funding for New York City social and cultural programs. Maloney fought for and secured $1.125 million in much-needed federal support for the Doe Fund and $1 million for the American Museum of Natural History. The funding is contained in the FY 2006 Science, State, Justice and Commerce Appropriations (SSJC) bill, which passed the Senate this week and is expected to be signed into law by the president.

WASHINGTON, DC - Thanks to a concerted effort by New York representatives, the government safety net established after 9/11 to encourage economic development in the face of a terrorist threat is more likely to be extended past its December 31 sunset date. Today, the House Financial Services Committee approved a bill to extend the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) for at least two years, while similar legislation is also moving through the Senate. Earlier this year, the Bush administration expressed its opinion that TRIA is no longer necessary - an opinion that was roundly criticized in Congress.

WASHINGTON, DC - As Northwest Airlines prepares to outsource 2,600 flight attendant jobs on international flights, there was action on Capitol Hill today to stop the plan. 88 bipartisan Members of Congress, led by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14), today urged Northwest CEO Doug Steenland to reconsider his company’s plan (view PDF document). Meanwhile more than 50 flight attendants, joined by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA and the Professional Flight Attendants Association, visited Washington today to meet with lawmakers.

WASHINGTON, DC - The final version of the Labor-HHS Appropriations bill will include the Bush administration’s proposal to take back $125 million from sick and injured 9/11 responders, it appears. The House-Senate conference reconciling the two versions of the bill will adopt House language to rescind the money, which was appropriated in 2002 as part of an emergency recovery package for New York.
