Mr. Speaker, I will always support our troops, and I thank them and honor them for their bravery and valor during the difficult task of fighting the insurgents in Iraq. I also commend and admire the people of Iraq for their determination and bravery in the historic elections this week. The turnout was impressive--it was a testament to the spirit of the people and it will hopefully lead to a strong democracy.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) reintroduced H.R. 4537, the Veterans Housing Fairness Act of 2005. Maloney’s legislation gives veterans greater housing choice by allowing them to use guaranteed VA loans to purchase cooperative housing. Currently, VA loans can be used to purchase a house, townhouse, condominium or even a mobile home, but not a co-op.

WASHINGTON, DC - Two lawmakers leading the fight against the gender wage gap have introduced legislation to establish an institute to continually examine the gap and make recommendations for businesses to combat it. This would be the first time an American institute would be created with the sole mission of studying the wage gap and issuing guidelines to close the gap. The Center for the Study of Women and Workplace Policy would be housed at a public university and would produce annual reports on wages, as well as best-practices guides for businesses.

WASHINGTON, DC - Yesterday, the House gave final approval to the "Presidential $1 Coin Act,” which will put each former President of the United States on the dollar coin, in succession, for a 10-year period. Thereafter, Sacagawea -the current occupant of the coin’s obverse side- will return. The bipartisan bill was sponsored by Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE) with Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) as the lead Democratic sponsor. The bill now awaits President Bush’s signature.

WASHINGTON, DC - Last night, the House unanimously approved HR 972, the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2005, which includes a measure championed by Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-Ohio) and Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) to end the demand for sex trafficking in the United States. Companion legislation will be considered by the Senate in the coming weeks.

Any bill that is called the “Pension Protection Act” should protect pensions, but the bill we have before us makes things worse in many ways for many current pensioners in this country and for many future pensioners.

WASHINGTON, DC - 38 Members of Congress, led by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), are hoping for a break in the White House silence on birth control and today have again asked President Bush whether or not he supports birth control (view PDF document). Since White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan first refused to answer a reporter’s question about the president’s support for birth control on May 26, Members of Congress have sent now four letters to President Bush asking for his position.

WASHINGTON, DC - In the wake of the recent Gulf Coast hurricanes, which have caused an estimated $60 billion in insured losses, it has become clear that the insurance system for catastrophic natural disasters may need reinforcement. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14) today introduced legislation that would create a federal reinsurance coverage program that would go into effect when losses top $50 billion in order to make sure that the insurance industry could sustain truly catastrophic events.
