Dear neighbor:

As we near the tail end of the first session of the 109th Congress, there is a buzz of activity in Washington. Here is an update on some of the issues I have tackled recently.

In this E-Newsletter:

Dec 22, 2005 Press Release
WASHINGTON, DC - Yesterday, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) and six other bipartisan House members joined Congressman Barney Frank (D-Massachusetts) in condemning recent anti-gay actions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

WASHINGTON, DC - Legislation introduced by Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D- Manhattan, Queens) would increase the federal government's support for programs to educate Americans about the Holocaust. Maloney’s bill, the Simon Wiesenthal Holocaust Education Assistance Act, took on an added urgency in light of Iranian President Ahmadinejad's recent allegations that the Holocaust is a "myth."

WASHINGTON, DC - More than four years after 9/11, hundreds of members of the National Guard who served at Ground Zero after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center will finally receive full federal retirement credit for their service. The final version of the FY06 Defense Authorization bill (H.R. 1815), which successfully passed the House of Representatives this week, includes a provision to provide the retirement credit.

WASHINGTON, DC - Members of Congress influential on homeland security are asking the White House to do its part to spend homeland security funds more wisely. America’s servicemen and servicewomen are the bravest most valiant and skillful soldiers on earth and because of them, our military is the best in history. As the daughter and brother of war veterans, I am particularly supportive of our nation’s soldiers. The men and women serving America deserve the full support of our nation. This is why it is particularly distasteful and dangerous when elected officials in Washington play politics with legislation that affects our troops serving right now in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

This administration, in concert with this Congress under this leadership, has given us five years of record debt and deficits. It seems that with each new month comes a new dubious record – just last week we learned that the trade deficit for October hit another all-time high.
Dec 19, 2005 Press Release
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens) applauded the House's decision to restore $125 million in federal funding for 9/11 responders. President Bush had proposed eliminating the funds in his 2006 budget. The restoration of the funds was included in the FY 2006 Defense Appropriations bill, which the House approved late last night. The Senate is expected to pass similar legislation this week.
Dec 17, 2005 Press Release
WASHINGTON, DC - An extension of the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act, which was set to expire at the end of the year, was approved by Congress today. The final version of the legislation was more limited than the version previously approved by the House of Representatives, but it nevertheless extends TRIA for two years.
Dec 16, 2005 Press Release
WASHINGTON, DC - Today’s news reports that the National Security Agency was authorized to monitor American citizens and foreign nationals in the United States in 2002 have given a new urgency to the push for a strong Civil Liberties Board, as recommended by the 9/11 Commission. The board, in a weakened form, was created as part of last year’s landmark intelligence reform bill.
